February 5, 2015 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Artem and Wes)

FLOCK FORECAST: A heads up that 10 people from the VOC are going to be going to Marble Canyon the weekend after next, Feb 14th and 15th. We’ll share and play nice with everyone, but keep in mind the routes might be extra busy.

The Canadian Rockies

This Trip Report is for those hopelessly and HOPELESS addicted coast ice climbers, suffering through these frustrating mild temps in BC. Go to the Rockies!

Dan C. and I (Wes) climbed 4 days and managed to climb Pretty Nuts in Golden, Murchison Falls in two 70m pitches, Carlsberg Column, and finishing off with Guiness Gulley and Hi Test above it.

All climbs were in great condition and nothing but big blue ice greeted us from beginning to end. In Field, the temps were around -5ºC and quite comfortable. Avy danger was nill when we got there, but starting to creep up after recent snowfall. During the week we didn’t have many crowds and had nothing but efficient (German, American, Quebec) climbers ahead of us due to some late starts.  Approaches were all hard boot packed conditions and record times were made accessing the climbs.

  1. Did you get a chance to climb in Marble Canyon on Feb 14/15? Just wondering how conditions were with the warm temps? Thanks, Thomas

  2. The VOC bailed and went to Squamish where rock climbing conditions are great. I advise the same
