HOARD WARNING: There will be a group of 12 Varsity Outdoor Club members going to Marble Canyon for the upcoming Saturday and Sunday (Jan 31/ Feb 1) weekend. Of course, we will do our best to accommodate other groups, but want to give word about our crowd.
Highway 99 South – Duffey Lake Road
The last week of warm weather has **not** been kind to the ice on the Duffey. Everyone should be heading to higher elevation (North Joffre) or the Rockies if they want to find decent ice to climb.
Nick V. and I (Jean-marc) first went to Cooper Creek to climb “Not So Burly, WI4″, but it was completely gone!!
Once we hiked out, we drove past Loose Lady, which appeared to be out and mostly running water. Further on, The Tube was also gone. We could see ice up at The Rambles and Shreddie was still hanging! So we decided to hike up to Rambles Centre, but it was too melted out for us to climb. We checked out Rambles Left which turned out to be climbable and actually had some enjoyable sticks. For the second pitch, I had to traverse far right under the roof and do The Column, which was barely in. In conclusion, the Duffey is in rough shape!
On the way back we picked up our friends who had done the Mount Garibaldi Neve Traverse in a day from South to North. They said the snow was very icy and unpleasant! Also the lake was devoid of snow and would have been easier with ice skates!
