February 8, 2014 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Mourad, Lyle and Drew)

Highway 99 South – Whistler

Fat Giblets/ Lacy Giblets – The Giblets climbs are in (pics below), at least for a few days. Next week the temps in Whistler and everything South creep back up above 0°C. The falls are located across the highway from the Wedge turnoff, about 200 meters up and just right of the power lines. Report and pics from February 7.

Highway 97 – Enderby Cliffs Provincial Park

Mythologic WI6 140m 4 pitches Lyle says Mythologic is good to go! If you’ve got the skills, this one won’t be in for long…

Highway 5 – Coquihalla

The Honeymoon – We (Drew, Fern and Graham) climbed The Honeymoon in Deneau Creek today (Feb 8). The climb is off the Coquihalla just before Sowaqua Creek, on the North side. It was first climbed in the 90’s and doesn’t get done much. You have to U-turn at Sowaqua and drive back. Park in a pullout on the West side of the bridge and hike up through the forest for 15-20 minutes, alongside the creek to a side drainage. Twenty (20) minutes of scrambling up frozen avvy debris and ice brings you to the climb. A big pitch (30 m of WI2 and 40 m of sustained 75 to 80 degree WI3) leads to two more pitches of rambling WI2. Descent is three 60m rappels back to the base, then scramble back down the drainage. The climb is in the sun from about 9:30am to 1:00pm and gets warm on sunny days. There is High Avalanche Hazard from the bowl above, so best to do it only on stable days with low snowpack like today. This is a great climb and would be a good beginner multipitch.
