February 6, 2014 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Marc-Andre, Jay and Jean-Marc)

Things are freezing up nicely. I may be a few days until they are ‘solid’, but certainly better and more climbable now than June-uary was (I rock climbed in Squamish three days last month, in a single layer!). If things are getting this good on the South Coast, Lillooet will only be better.

Highway 99 South – Whistler

Suicide Bluffs was in on Tuesday (Feb 4). See Jay’s pic in the gallery below. They are climbable now, but maybe not for long (temps are increasing again late next week).

Access Issue at Mystery Roach Hotel area (Wedgemount). See the photo taken February 4 below.
Jay and company found that there is a new road built directly to the cliff. The roads now tie into the Wedgewoods subdivision. Two excavators (see pic) were working and burning brush piles directly underneath the cliff. They were told the area is private property. Conditions-wise, there was not much ice (due to minimal ice build up or Mordor like environmental degradation). CME (Whistler) is the construction contractor working the site.

Highway 99 South – Squamish

Check out this article from Gripped magazine online. Shannon Falls is happening, for those with the skills to put it together!

Highway 99 South – Lions Bay

Plenty of ice runnels have formed below the North face of West Lion today (Feb 6). I (Marc-Andre) soloed the left hand line (see pic below) to get to the Northeast Buttress. It’s a perfect ‘sit start’. Great conditions in there right now!
