January 20, 2014 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Peter and Garry)

Highway 99 North – Marble Canyon

The Deeping Wall is still hanging in there despite the warm temperatures.
The Showdown has lost almost all the ice/verglas through the crux. It’s currently a lot harder then its original M7 rating.
The first and second pitches of Icy BC were actively decaying over the weekend. The third pitch has decayed completely.

Highway 5 – Coquihalla

I (Peter) decided to walk into Box Canyon Sunday (Jan 19) to see if the Grim Reaper or Scotch on the Rocks were in. They weren’t and nothing else was as well. Found a new flow. Attempted it, but rotten ice turned me around. I’ll be back. Pictures below.

Travel in was easy on a good crust with enough snow coverage. Approach slope to Scotch on the Rocks had slid in the past couple of days. Be aware of avy conditions.

Highway 3 – Manning Park

Manning has been seeing cooler temperatures than other areas. Nepopekum Falls may have suffered some deterioration.
Go With The Flow could still be good to go, but we need more cold temperatures.
