January 13, 2014 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Peter)

Highway 3 – Manning Park

Given that Manning stayed cold all of this week, we headed back today (Jan 12) to tick off Nepopekum Falls.

The climb was in reasonable shape, -4.2°C at the base of the climb at 10am. Lots of running water on sections of the route. Climbed an approach pitch from the climbers right to gain the base of the 55m main falls. The direct line was the most wet so some weaving ensued, which lead to a belay at around 30m in a sheltered stance on climbers right. Top out was in fun WI 4 shape. Lots of moving snow and cleaning given that Manning saw 80cm in the past 48hrs.

If it warms up it will probably start to open up again with the volume of water running from behind it.

Green flagging helps take you the right way on the approach. NOTE: Snowshoes mandatory on approach.

The top rappel anchor (on tree) was replaced with new cord today (Sunday January 12).
