Highway 5 – Coquihalla
Jean Marc Savoie and I (Henrik Hinkkala) went up Engage! at Box Canyon on Jan 13th. Conditions were similar to the last post and the crux pillar was fat. There were also tracks heading up a lower angle route approx 50m left of Engage! (not sure of route name). Otherwise, as has been mentioned previously, the area could still use some cold temperatures for the other routes.
Make It So looked like it was getting close to being climbable. Ski or snowshoes highly recommended for the walk in.
Highway 99 South – Mount Curie/Gates Lake
We (Peter Watson) arduously broke trail up to and climbed Whisper Falls. We confirm the 80m height that is marked with a question mark in the guide. Conditions were hard with lots of clearing of snow and rotten ice on a lot of the route, except the steepest sections. There’s a V thread/Abalakov in place at 50m on the right side; in a well protected belay stance. There’s another 40m (30m of ice climbing) up to a new tree anchor on the right. The route was fun, but we headed up into the forest on the right of the drainage on the way up and took 2.5hrs to get to climb. On way out we stayed in the mildly overgrown creekbed to low down where we could pick up our up-tracks. If I was going back I would go up the creek bed rather than the right side of the drainage.
The runnels and walls to the right of Whisper Falls looked in and fun.
