December 10, 2012 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Drew)

Was anyone out to Lillooet this weekend? I haven’t heard a peep about conditions there, but the temps are heading in the right direction.

Highway 5 – Coquihalla

I (Drew) was skiing in the Coquihalla area on Sunday and checked out some ice conditions (or maybe lack of ice conditions). Lower elevation stuff (Box Canyon and below) has about 1 meter of snow on the ground and is still pretty warm, with lots of running water and only a few small icicles.

Higher elevation stuff (Falls Lake and Markhor) is buried under almost 2 meters of snow. Strong winds from the SW were wind loading NE facing slopes. Ice-hosting features near Falls Lake were either fully buried, or mostly buried and severely threatened by white death from above – certainly not conducive conditions for ice climbing.
