March 18, 2012 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Evan)

Highway 99 South – Duffey Lake Road

Hankering for some time outsid,e but with poor avalanche forecasts for any alpine objectives, Lawrence and I (Evan) decided on a last-minute trip to check out the Rambles. Camped Friday night in perfectly still and clear skies, and woke up to -2C temps with fresh snow lightly dusting us. Climbed the Rambles Left and Upper Left Direct, then TR’d several of the routes.
Rambles Left
was in great shape still.
Upper Left Direct’s
pillar is rotten on the sides, but fantastic in center.
The lower-angle ramp to the right of Upper Left Direct (name?) was largely rotten and dinner-plating, but climbable with care.
High Step was in great shape.
Aladdin was a bit thin especially at the bottom – didn’t climb it.
We could see Rambles Center from the road and it looked less-formed that Rambles Left – ended up not checking it out after a satisfying day at Left.

We were very surprised to not find anyone there! Easy car-camping at the pullout with <2cm of snow on the ground, and the road’s in great shape. These climbs won’t be around much longer.
