January 2, 2012 Ice Climbing Report (Thanks Jean)

Highway 99 South – Duffey Lake Road – Joffrey

(Jean) spent a day at North Joffre Creek with Nick. The approach was pretty fast (about 1.5h) on easy logging road. We climbed Fromage Suisse and found the ice to be variable, wet in places, with a bit of snice cover. The rest of the area looked good, although it would be better if the snow would melt. While climbing, the sun came out and started to heat up the slopes across the valley from us. We witnessed close to 15 point release avalanches running in the gullies up to a size 2 avalanche. A few of them came close to our uptrack. The Sun is starting to get some punch to it; be safe out there.
