February 26, 2011 (Thanks Ken, Alistair, Jessica and Peter)

Highway 99 North – Marble Canyon
Although an arctic cold front settled on Duffey Lake Road and Marble Canyon, we still managed to climb ice! Geoff led the Deeping Wall on Tuesday Feb 22nd. It’s making ice and in fat conditions.

Icy BC is a bit punched out on the first pitch, but better as you get higher. It’s pretty beat up; the top is sketchy ice. The second pitch of Icy BC is fat and was fun to lead. The third pitch of Icy BC is in fat, good conditions, WI5 condition. Geoff led it. The climb to the left of the third pitch has old rotten ice that is fracturing. In general, the route is hard and picked out. Still fun though!

Highway 99 South – Duffey Lake Road
I (Ken) climbed Synchronicity on Thursday, it’s in great shape, good protection all the way to the top, with every variation of ice out there with the cold temp’s. Here’s the kicker… If anybody is going to climb it this weekend…. in which I hope somebody does, I forgot a very important piece of equipment behind the hose, 5M below the top, behind the pillar!!!!!! A fat reward will be offered if you find the items. With fading light, cold temps and a little fatigue, I managed to forget them and was on the second rap before realizing my humiliating mistake!!

Thanks in advance,
Ken

I (Alistair) climbed at the Rambles Right hand side yesterday. Overall the ice is in good shape.  The second bolt of Eagle Ears, the mixed line above the Peterson-Smaridge dihedral, is currently missing a hanger.

On Thursday Feb 24th we (Jessica and Geoff) climbed Rambles Center, which was in hard ice condition. There is about an 8 foot bulge that popped/fractured after a light stick of the axe. The second pitch is in. The upper pitch has a lot of ice; we climbed the route to the far right, though, the flow was creaking and popping. Lots of other routes look to be in on Duffey Lake Road: Serendipity, Synchronicity, The Tube… We looked at them from the car on the way home. Carl’s Berg doesn’t look too great. We saw lots of ice on the way home near Boston Bar.

Highway 99 South – Whistler/Cal-Chek
After a week trip to the Rockies, I (Peter) returned to cold temps at home. I was excited when my partner Nicola agreed to try ice climbing today for the first time at Cal-Chek. Routes were in and thin. Lead the left line traversing to find the thickest ice finishing up the center. Mostly 10cm and 13cm screws but a 16cm at the top kept my confidence up. Go get it before the rains do!
